What is Godly Play®?

Godly Play® is a method of religious education and spiritual guidance rooted in the Montessori tradition. It uses storytelling, ritual, and imagination to support children's spiritual development.

What aspects of Godly Play are protected by copyright?

The following are protected by copyright:

  • Godly Play lesson scripts and language

  • Published materials (books, manuals, training documents)

  • Artwork, diagrams, and story figures

  • Original classroom designs and templates


What is protected by trademark?

"Godly Play®" is a registered trademark. The logo and name cannot be used without explicit permission except as allowed under license or fair use. This includes:

  • Business names

  • Websites and URLs

  • Training events or curriculum descriptions


Who owns the rights to Godly Play® content?

The Godly Play Foundation and its international affiliates (such as Godly Play UKGodly Play Canada, etc.) hold the legal copyrights and trademarks. Church Publishing Incorporated is the custodian of all copyright related to Godly Play Volumes and published books.

What are appropriate uses of Godly Play® materials?

Permissible Uses:

  • Facilitating Godly Play in classrooms, clinical spaces, and other relevant settings

  • Reading published stories directly from Godly Play books

  • Quoting small excerpts for review, academic discussion, or instruction (with attribution)

  • Using the method in certified training programs led by licensed Godly Play Trainers

  • Personal spiritual practice or reflection (non-public)

  • Promoting a Godly Play program using text, logos, seals, or badges distributed for use,  without modification and in accordance with published brand guidance. See our brand guidance for Godly Players.

What uses would violate copyright or trademark?

Violations Include:

  • Photocopying or scanning full stories or materials for distribution

  • Uploading lesson scripts online

  • Recording, livestreaming, and/or posting full Godly Play sessions or storytelling publicly without consent and attribution

  • Creating derivative works or adaptations without permission

  • Using the name “Godly Play” in your own training program or business

  • Selling homemade Godly Play materials labeled as Godly Play materials

Can I create my own stories using the Godly Play format?

Yes, you can create original stories inspired by the Godly Play method, but you must not present them as Godly Play® stories. You should clearly differentiate them and not use the trademarked name in a misleading way.

Can I post videos or photos from a Godly Play session online?

  • Photos: Limited, respectful photos that do not reveal scripts or materials in full may be allowed with consent and attribution.

  • Videos: Full sessions or storytelling videos are not permitted without written permission from the Godly Play Foundation and attribution

  • Training footage is strictly prohibited unless licensed.

What should I do if I want to use Godly Play content in a publication or project?

Contact the Godly Play Foundation or your International Affiliate to request formal permission or licensing.

What happens if someone violates these rights?

Unauthorized use may result in:

  • Cease and desist letters

  • Loss of certification or licensing (if certified or licensed) 

  • Legal action for copyright/trademark infringement

The Foundation emphasizes education and collaboration but will enforce its rights to protect the mark, the method and the community.
